LEVEDIA (λεβεντιά)

An example of levedia is when the women from Souli (Souliotisses) chose to throw first their children and then, themselves off of Mount Zalongo. History commemorates their sacrifice as “the Dance of Zalongo”. At another point, some other Souliotisses threw themselves into a river and drowned in order to avoid captivity and enslavement to the Turks.

"Λεβεντιά" is not a word that can precisely be translated. Stoutness, courage, fortitude, valour, gallantry can also be use to describe its meaning. Funnily enough"λεβεντιά"is all these words, and many more, together!!!!
